Communications and Stakeholder Relations
Communications and Stakeholder Relations manages all functions related to internal and external communication and marketing, oversees strategic alliances and provides legal advice. There are four units:
Stakeholder Relations
The nature of Cambridge ESOL's work is taking us more and more into strategic alliances with other organisations. This means that we depend increasingly upon good working relationships with external contacts. Broadly speaking, Stakeholder Relations aims to:
- nurture, develop and co-ordinate relationships with key stakeholders across Cambridge ESOL
- facilitate sharing of stakeholder information with relevant parties across Cambridge ESOL
- ensure effective links throughout the organisation as a whole
- drive collaboration with stakeholders
- explore opportunities to work with new stakeholders.
Marketing Services
Marketing Services is responsible for the management and protection of the Cambridge ESOL brand, and its relationship to the Cambridge Assessment and University of Cambridge brands. It also produces and distributes resources to support business development activities worldwide. It has four teams.

Legal Affairs
We have a dedicated ESOL legal team. Its key functions are to:
- ensure that all Cambridge ESOL work (excluding UK HR work) is carried out within legal requirements.
- deal with litigation if this arises
- ensure that overseas offices are run within local laws
- protect ESOL Intellectual Property Rights through trade marking and other measures.
Support Products and Services
This unit was set up to co-ordinate the production of the products and services which support our core exams. It is responsible for developing learning materials such as the Top Tips series and an interactive website for candidates
Christine Nuttall - Director
Christine Nuttall has more than 25 years of experience in the English language teaching profession, including setting up and running her own successful language school.
She joined Cambridge ESOL in 1997 after working for the British Council for seven years in Spain and London, acting as Director Assessment before going on to head a new group, Communications and Stakeholder Relations. Besides being directly involved with some of ESOL's key external relationships, Christine is responsible for ensuring ESOL has a consistent policy and approach with regard to its key contacts and stakeholders. She also oversees the production of materials and services which support our assessments, including learning tools, promotional literature and seminars and conferences.
Christine holds a BA in English and American Literature and an MA in TESOL.
Stephen McKenna - Assistant Director, Marketing
Stephen McKenna studied Modern and Medieval Languages at the University of Cambridge and has a Masters Degree in Mass Communication from the University of Leicester. He joined Cambridge ESOL in 1998, after several years working for the UCLES group in a variety of editorial, publishing and public relations roles, with a particular focus on communicating change in national curricula, both in the UK and overseas. He is responsible for Cambridge ESOL’s marketing communications and publishing activities, including branding, public relations and the development of Cambridge ESOL’s websites.
Sharon Harvey - Assistant Director, Support Products and Services
Sharon Harvey is Assistant Director, Support Products and Services. She joined Cambridge ESOL as Development Manager, Latin America, before becoming Regional Manager for the Americas.
Sharon began her ELT career in South America, working as an English language teacher in Argentina. She subsequently taught English in Brazil and in the UK, before moving into educational marketing, working as a Market Development Executive for the Bell Language Schools.
Sharon holds a BA (Hons) in Spanish and Portuguese from the University of Southampton.
Jenny Grewcock - Stakeholder Relations Manager
Jenny Grewcock’s role as a Stakeholder Relations Manager is to ensure that consistently high quality relationships with Cambridge ESOL’s stakeholder community are developed and maintained. This involves providing support to those people dealing with stakeholders, as well as actively promoting effective stakeholder engagement as an integral part of day-to-day practices.
Jenny has widespread experience in international partnership and marketing roles in the corporate world. Before joining Cambridge ESOL, Jenny worked as a corporate business trainer and teacher trainer in China. She has an Honours degree in Modern Languages and Marketing from the University of Salford.
Andrew Nye - Stakeholder Relations Manager
Andrew Nye’s role closely reflects Jenny Grewcock’s as a Stakeholder Relations Manager in ensuring quality relationships with Cambridge ESOL’s stakeholder community. Andrew has a first degree in modern languages from the University of Edinburgh and an MBA from Oxford Brookes Business School. He has extensive experience in English language teaching around the world as a teacher, teacher trainer, and academic manager. Before joining Cambridge ESOL he worked as Director of Studies at International House Lisbon.
Heather Saunders - Marketing Officer - Stakeholder Support
Heather Saunders is responsible for various initiatives Cambridge ESOL has launched in recent years to provide better support for candidates taking our exams, including the series of Information for Candidates booklets and the new Candidate Support website. She has a background in educational publishing, having worked for many years in both the editorial and sales/marketing/business development functions for Longman ELT, where she managed the sales and marketing function in Tokyo for four years. As well as a BA (Hons) in Modern Languages (French and German) from the University of Oxford, she has an MBA from Strathclyde and the Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
Jason Hurren - Campaigns Manager
Jason Hurren has worked for over a decade at Cambridge ESOL and he is now manager of the Events Unit, which is responsible for representing Cambridge ESOL at conferences, seminars, exhibitions and other events around the world. Jason is also responsible for co-ordinating promotional campaigns for large initiatives such the launch of new exams or the updates to FCE and CAE. Jason has an MA in History and Politics from the University of Glasgow, a post graduate qualification from the Charted Institute of Marketing and is currently studying Marketing Communications.
Chris Lewis - Marketing Copywriter
Chris Lewis provides a broad range of marketing copy, from simple letters to text for websites, brochures and other publications. Chris has been a professional communicator for more than twenty years, working in fields as varied as publishing, marketing and newspaper journalism. Before joining Cambridge ESOL, he worked in public relations within the public sector, and holds a MA in Public Policy and Management.
David Chapman - Workplace Assessment copywriter
David Chapman’s role is new to the organisation where he is primarily involved in the global promotion and implementation of the Workplace Assessment portfolio of products and the development of effective key messages and strategies to exploit business opportunities. David studied business studies at The University of Teesside and holds a Chartered Institute of Marketing diploma. He has over 15 years of experience in the B2B marketing world working for blue chip companies, agencies and Plcs.
Fiona Bannatyne - Marketing Communications - Internet Services Manager
As Internet Services Manager for Cambridge ESOL, Fiona Bannatyne manages websites for the Marketing Services department and works with the New Media Co-ordinator to ensure the sites are up to date. Fiona has an MA in English and History from the University of Dundee and the Chartered Institute of Marketing Certificate in Marketing. After graduating, she worked as an editor for the Press Association and Hobsons Publishing, before moving into online content and marketing.
Stuart Giblin - Media Relations Officer
Stuart Giblin acts as the first point of contact for all media enquiries relating to Cambridge ESOL. He is responsible for the exploitation of media coverage by building collaborative relationships with key journalists, editors and external media agencies. He also plays a key role in editing and reviewing news-based messages for various communications materials.
Before joining Cambridge ESOL, Stuart was employed in the communications team of a government watchdog. He also has experience in publishing production working on higher education text books and websites.
