Unseen work by John Trim to be published as part of English Profile Programme

13 February 2009

English Profile, the research programme to develop Reference Level Descriptions for English, has entered a new phase of activity which will include the publishing of an unseen work by John Trim on the Breakthrough level.

The seminar, hosted by Cambridge ESOL, was the latest in a series attended by partners and members of the extended English Profile Network. The atmosphere was markedly less formal than previous occasions, reflecting both the length of time that that the partners have been collaborating with each other on English Profile and also the practical approach to planning the future.

While the seminar featured a number of papers related to recent research carried out as part of English Profile, the final session of the two-day event outlined a timetable of deliverable publications and activities for the next 12 months. Cambridge ESOL’s Nick Saville said he expected to see a preliminary version of the Reference Level Descriptions developed in 2009. Other key points agreed at the seminar were:

  • A new website to be delivered, under the direction of Cambridge University Press.
  • John Trim’s three publications with Jan van Ek describing the Threshold, Vantage and Waystage levels, and his own (as yet) unpublished work on Breakthrough, to be made available on the new website.
  • All the member partners to submit papers outlining their research to date for an edited collection to be published later in 2009.
  • A full report on the seminar to be published on the website.
