Taiwan Ministry of Education Recognises Cambridge ESOL Certificates

1 February 2008

Recognition provides language learners with more opportunities to demonstrate their English  language ability.

Students in Taiwan who want to prove their English language proficiency will now have a wider choice of international examinations, following a government scheme to improve and standardise English language examinations used in technical and vocational colleges.

The Ministry of Education in Taiwan has now officially recognised qualifications from University of Cambridge ESOL, covering business and general English. Examinations recognised by the ministry include world-famous qualifications such as BULATS (the Business Language Testing System), Business English Certificates and IELTS (International English Language Testing System).

In order to improve the quality of English language examinations, the Ministry of Education undertook an evaluation aimed at standardising the language certificates used by technical and vocational colleges in Taiwan. After a rigorous six-month process by the evaluation committee, Cambridge ESOL’s certificates have been validated for use and accepted by the ministry as proof of English proficiency.

Su-Wei Wang,  Cambridge ESOL’s  Marketing Manager in Taiwan Said: “International qualifications can be a valuable tool for students who want to show an employer how their English language skills measure up to glabal standards. Cambridge ESOL exams are designed to ensure candidates can use English effectively in real-life situations. That is why we insist on a face-to-face speaking test. We are delighted that the Ministry of Education have recognised the value of Cambridge ESOL exams”.

This is the latest development in official recognition for Cambridge ESOL examinations.  In 2005, the Central Personnel Administration of Taiwan (CPA) accepted Cambridge ESOL examinations as proof of language proficiency tests for government departments.
